4 Cleaning and Maintenance Tips for Leather Briefcases

When you buy a good leather briefcase, you know that it can be pretty expensive. To keep it looking good for years, you need to take care of it. Daily use can take its toll after a while and if you do not pay attention to it, it will most definitely deteriorate.

You would not want this to happen, right? After all, they don’t come cheap. If you take care of it, it will last you a lifetime. That means taking care of the leather. But what do you need to do? Let’s take a look at caring for your leather briefcase.

1. Taking Care Of Leather

To take care of leather properly, you need to replenish the leather’s oils occasionally. This helps to nourish the fibers, keeping them flexible and durable. Use a good leather conditioner to achieve this. These conditioners will have natural oils and waxes. This is absorbed by the leather, so it won’t have a residue that can rub off onto your skin or clothes. As always, it is better to buy a quality product to use on your leather to help it look great and protect it.

2. Cleaning Leather

Leather will get dirt and grime as well as absorb oils from your hands. This can actually contaminate the oils in the leather, causing discolouration. Accidents will also happen. If there are some light stains, you can use warm water and a damp cloth to try and remove them. If you are to use a soap, use a very gentle or mild soap.

For more stubborn stains, use a deep cleaning solution and rub gently in a circular motion, making sure the cloth is not too damp, otherwise the leather may get damaged from absorbing too much water. Use a clean, dry cloth and remove the cleaner and then allow it to dry. Then, apply a good leather conditioner.

3. Waterproofing Leather

Water and leather is not a good combination. If leather gets wet, the water can lift away the oils and cause the leather to get brittle. Dyes in the leather may also be removed and cause unsightly spots. Beeswax is good for waterproofing leather. Remember though, that this can also be worn off, so it will have to be applied from time to time.

Use a special leather balm and apply it with a clean dry cloth. Again, use circular motions. Let it sit for about 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes, use another clean dry cloth and use circular motions to remove any residue. Your leather is now waterproofed.

4. How Often To Care For Leather

This really does not have a clear answer because it really depends on several things. These include how often you use it, how old it is and what kind of environmental conditions it is subjected to. In dry or humid environments, you can do the maintenance every 4 months or perhaps twice a year. In a wet environment, every 3 months would be a good idea. If it is older, then you may want to care for it a little more often.

If you really take good care of your leather briefcase, it can last a lifetime and could even be passed on to someone else. When caring for it, use good quality products and follow the instructions. Be gentle when cleaning and your leather briefcase will look impressive always.
