Now that you have decided to do the landscaping yourself, where do you start?

Start by being clear about what you really want. Have the total effect in your mind before you embark. Make a sketch of the yard in view of where you want things to be. You decide what materials, style, and colors you want.  Are there things you want to incorporate into the space you have? Do you want space for your children to play?  You may incorporate fountains, a seating area, and a fireplace.  You should be motivated by the fact that landscaping changes the outlook of your house.  This will cause the value of your house to increase.

  1. Take Your Time

Do not be in a hurry to make adjustments in your yard.  Quick fixes may end up being a disaster in the long run.  Take your time and think through what you really want and where you want it. If need be, you can put up temporary solutions to cover areas that are bare. Ground covers that are fast growing.  Also, short shrubs that can be transplanted should you change your mind. The idea is to have something there temporarily.

  1. Do Not Be Too Ambitious

Do not try to do everything at a once.  Pace yourself and do not take shortcuts.  Stick to the plan and enjoy the process.  Pick one small thing from your sketch and start with this.  It will give you a sense of accomplishment and morale to go on.  Look at your yard like a painting canvas and every task you undertake like a stroke of a brush.  Take your time and you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

  1. Identify A Focal Point
